Each advance in belt rank will improve one's total awareness and use of the mental and physical abilities that are within each of us. Confidence, concentration, memory, and relaxation will be strengthened. Balance, power, speed, coordination, agility, flexibility, cardiovascular conditioning, and reactions improve as one attains each belt. Thus, with increased confidence and strength, each student will be able to fulfill their ultimate potential.

Testing Information

Our chief goal at The Karate Family Center is for our students to steadily develop better mental, physical and spiritual proficiency. As students progress through the ranking system, they will develop these skills.

To determine when a student is ready to advance, specific pre-designed tests, or belt promotion exams, are given. If the student passes the test, the student is awarded a higher rank; this denotes the student's proficiency level and gives him/her recognition for their achievements.

It is important to note that not all students will be eligible to test on every testing date. As students advance the techniques become more challenging and require more and more practice. Oftentimes it is necessary for a student to skip a testing date while he or she continues to work on the required skills and techniques needed for advancement.

Testing Eligibility

In order for students to be eligible for a belt promotion exam, the student
must meet the following criteria:

1. The student must have met the estimated minimum time requirement for each belt. The minimum time requirement is generally 3 months and 24 lessons; this helps to ensure the student has had enough time to learn and practice all of the techniques required for advancement.

2. A student must have learned all the techniques required for the next belt level. This should be done with 2-3 classes a week. Cramming lessons or spacing them too far apart usually results in poor techniques. For most, 2 classes a week is not only an ideal physical development rate, but also a mental and emotional development rate. A routine training schedule develops very high quality techniques and proficiency.

3. All students must be approved to test by an instructor. This is to make certain that the required degree of proficiency has been reached.

Testing Frequently Asked Questions

- When is testing?
Tests are performed every three months usually
· First Saturday in March and June
· Third Saturday in August
· First Saturday in December
Students testing for White, Yellow and Green Belts test at 10:00 AM. Students testing for Blue, Purple, Red, Brown and Black Belts
· Test at 1:00 PM

- When are the results known?
Results are known the day of testing. Belts will be handed out immediately after all students have completed their testing. Students who have passed will be awarded their new belt at a ceremony held at the end of testing. A certificate that recognizes the student’s advancement to the next belt level will be available to be picked up within a week. Family and friends are invited to attend and to take pictures.

- What is probation?
If a student is put on probation, it means the majority of their test was satisfactory, but they may have performed certain techniques inadequately. In these cases, it is to the student’s advantage to practice a little longer at their present rank. The probationary period is typically a minimum of two weeks and helps to give the student an opportunity to strengthen their weak areas. At the completion of the probationary period, students will be eligible (and are expected) to retest during their regular class.

- OOP’s- I failed! What now?
If the student fails, they stay at their present rank and retest again at the next testing for no additional charge. The chance of the student out right failing is very unlikely, because the instructor will not allow the student to test if they can’t pass the pre-test in the regular class.

Remember - All students in first through twelve grades must furnish us with a copy of their report cards on a regular basis. The top six students with the best report cards will receive a special academic achievement uniform. We select six different students each test.
